"My first experience with art therapy opened a door I never knew existed... Working with oil pastels gave me access to a place within myself that I had yet to explore...The physical act of putting these images on paper was in itself a healing process. It also allowed me to take a step away from myself and view my feelings as images.

Hungry Souls

The Allasso Foundation is proud to annually host the Hungry Souls exhibit. This innovative and powerful exhibition presents the work of women and men who explore, cope with, and resolve issues related to their struggles with body image and eating disorders. Art mediums include chalk and oil pastel, paint, wire and clay sculpture, and collage.

You are invited to witness how art is used to give voice to the unspoken pain, conflict and sometimes resolution intrinsic to eating disorders. Art is a visual and symbolic language which can be highly effective due to the symbolic nature of eating disorders. As art reflects life and culture, these images are reflective of the process of dealing with the pain and internal changes occurring as one grows in confidence and self-expression. In many ways, these works can be seen as self-portraits or mirrors expressing powerful, dynamic emotions.

In addition to providing the creators of these works with alternative ways to deal with disturbed body image and eating, the art provides all of us with new eyes and insight with which we can see ourselves, others and the culture around us. The work and the process is about pain, joy and hope. Statements written by the artists provide an intimate glimpse into the background and history and thoughts of the individual creators.
